Manifest Destiny and the Mexican-American War

 

MANIFEST DESTINY, WESTWARD EXPANSION, AND JACKSONIANISM  

Manifest Destiny and Jacksonianism added incentive for westward expansion through the means of liberty.

Manifest Destiny is “…expansion, prearranged by heaven”

The Louisiana Purchase fueled expansionism and caused many to move west.

Andrew Jackson was the founder of Jacksonianism, the idea that everyone had the right to expand their property
-Westward expansion in 18th and 19th centuries for individual economic opportunities and a better life.

-Louisiana Purchase (1803) acquired land in the central area of American sub-continent and created major influx of people into the West.

-Adams-Onis treaty-Spain ceded Florida to United States.  US relinquished all claims to Texas.

-1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain. Texas, California etc. part of Mexico.

-Manifest Destiny driving force behind westward expansion.

-Jacksonianism-prominent idea in the 1820-1840’s.  Jacksonianism was the “opportunity and expansion for everyone…” (Stephenson 30).

-Lots of public land sold during the Jacksonian era,  led to more territorial expansion.

-Idea of liberty to be given to non-Americans became argument for Manifest Destiny and westward expansion.


-Democrats especially felt expansion was the way to fuel liberty, because it  prevented over-population, poverty, and "wage-slavery."
